So, you’ve found a new groovy piece of jewelry, or a new athame, a brilliant new oracle or tarot deck, maybe new runes or even a vintage pendulum at the local antique shop … do you just jump right in and start using your new treasure? I would say that is a big negative hot mamma. Consecration is the path I take. I like to make sure my goodies are in top energetic form for the workings I will be doing.
Witchcraft, the way I practice as a solitary witch, is based on intention and what feels right to me. So, I’ don’t really worry about there being a right or wrong way to do things. Personally, I’ve always tossed the instructions out after Ikea shopping adventures. The following write up is by no means the way it “has” to be done. Use this as a loose guideline for what to do and say, as it was presented to me as a bullet point list as opposed to a step-by-step manual.

Consecration Ritual for Tuning Your Tools to You
Equipment
- The Tool or Object to Consecrate
- Lighter or Matches
Ingredients
- One incense stick
- White Chime Candle
- Cup or small bowl of water
- A small bowl of salt
Instructions
- If you normally cast a circle once you’ve taken some protection measures (you do always take protection measures, right?!) you should cast your circle now - making sure all the tools and instruments you’ll need are within the circle. (Don’t forget matches or a lighter!)
- Light up that candle as well as the incense.
- Take your item or tool in your hands and face the East. Pass the object in and around the incense smoke or move the incense around the object and say what feels right to you and your practice, but I say:“I call to my Gods and Goddesses of the East, the Guardians of Air. I call upon you to ask for the consecration of this (name the object) and charge it with your energy and power to make it a sacred object in my space to be used in my craft.”
- Turn to the South and CAREFULLY pass the object or tool over the flame of the candle say something like:“I call to my Gods and Goddesses of the South, the Guardians of Fire. I call upon you to ask for the consecration of this (name the object) and charge it with your energy and power to make it a sacred object in my space to be used in my craft.”
- Turn to the West and pass the object over the water as you say:“I call to my Gods and Goddesses of the West, the Guardians of Water. I call upon you to ask for the consecration of this (name the object) and charge it with your energy and power to make it a sacred object in my space to be used in my craft.
- Turn to the North and pass your object over the salt and say:“I call to my Gods and Goddesses of the North, the Guardians of Earth. I call upon you to ask for the consecration of this (name the object) and charge it with your energy and power to make it a sacred object in my space to be used in my craft.
- Turn and face your altar or workspace with your object held out in front of you as if you were offering it to someone and say something along these lines:“Through the power of the Sun, Moon, and stars, with the guidance of my ancestors, higher beings and deities who assist me, I charge this (objects name)with the properties of Earth, Air, Fire and Water. All negative energy from previous owners or workings are banished from this object and I am now the one true owner.”
And that, in a nutshell, is my wicked simple consecration ritual.
